Carbon Capture and Storage Association x Skylark Media

The Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA) represents the companies and institutions building the UK’s carbon capture industry. Their work sits at the intersection of climate policy, energy infrastructure and public understanding – translating a complex industrial process into something government, media and the public can engage with.

The Problem

Carbon capture and storage is one of the most misunderstood tools in the climate toolkit. The technology is complex, the public conversation around it is politicised, and the visual language to explain it barely exists. CCSA needed explainers that could make carbon capture and storage comprehensible to policymakers, journalists and the public – without dumbing the science down or dressing it up.

The Approach

We approached the brief as a translation problem, not an animation brief. CCS doesn’t lack evidence — it lacks legibility. Our job was to build a visual vocabulary that could carry the science honestly while remaining watchable.

A mixed-media technique gave us the range we needed: clean motion graphics for technical processes, illustrated environments for context, and live-action overlays where real-world reference points helped ground the abstraction. We kept the tone informed, not breathless – CCS is serious infrastructure, and the animation needed to feel like it.

The Result

Deliverables spanned a hero explainer introducing the technology end-to-end, plus a suite of shorter modular explainers breaking down individual stages – capture, transport, storage – for use across stakeholder communications, social and conference settings.
