FASHION MUSEUM BATH
Helping Bath imagine its new Fashion Museum
Fashion Museum Bath holds one of the world’s great fashion collections. For decades, it welcomed visitors at Bath’s Assembly Rooms. But in 2022, it closed its doors and began a major move. Its new home will be the Old Post Office, in Bath’s Milsom Quarter. The project is led by Bath & North East Somerset Council, as part of a wider regeneration plan. However, the new museum won’t open its doors for several years.
The Problem
This created an unusual communications challenge. The old site had to close, yet excitement still needed to build. There would be no museum to visit for years. So how do you keep the public engaged with something they can’t yet see? At the same time, stakeholders and funders needed confidence in the vision. In short, B&NES needed to make a future museum feel real and exciting today.
The Approach
We treated this as a film about possibility, not absence. An empty future site could easily feel like a gap. Instead, we made it the star.
First, we filmed at both locations — the collection itself and the new site at the Old Post Office. Then we overlaid visuals onto the empty building. As a result, viewers could imagine the finished museum rising around them. The bare walls became galleries, entrances and public space.
We also put real voices at the centre. Members of the public shared what the museum means to them. Their words gave the vision warmth and credibility, rather than leaning on architectural renders alone.
Throughout, the tone balanced civic ambition with genuine excitement. So stakeholders came away with a confident story to share. And the people of Bath were given something to look forward to.
