WEST OF ENGLAND COMBINED AUTHORITY
Flagship brand film that united a diverse region under one identity for its newly elected Mayor
Skylark Media specialises in brand film production for public sector organisations, regional authorities and government bodies. For the West of England Combined Authority (WECA), Skylark produced the flagship brand film to launch the vision of the region’s newly elected Mayor.
The problem
The West of England Combined Authority exists to drive economic growth across the Bristol and Bath metro regions – tackling transport, housing, skills and inequality. A newly elected Mayor inherited a region split in identity and lacking trust. The diverse regions are all technically one authority, but had no shared story to unite them.
Our approach to public sector brand film
The region stretches from Bridgerton’s Georgian Bath, to Banksy’s alternative Bristol, from coastal Weston-super-Mare, and all the postcard villages in between. They are all technically one authority, but had no shared story to unite them.
The results
This public sector brand film gave the West of England Combined Authority a confident visual identity at one of the most significant moments in the region’s political history. Skylark’s crew filmed across dozens of locations. Our pre-planned visual transitions were designed to lock together disparate regions for a flowing portrait of the region. Iconic buildings were rendered through a Jenga-block device – stacking the West of England’s landmarks into a cohesive structure that worked as both graphic motif and regional metaphor.
A bold graphical layer gave the new authority a distinctive visual identity. The centrepiece film premiered at the launch event for the Mayor’s vision. It is supported by a series of shorter edits cut specifically to stop the scroll on social.
I must have seen it 200 times and still don’t tire of watching it.
